Andhra Pradesh Govt. Launches Statewide Free Cancer Screening Programme

Vijayawada: AP Medical and Health department has asked people of the state to get checked for cancer free of cost in the ongoing screening programme that started on November 14 and will continue for the next 10 months.

In a statement here on Saturday, the department pointed out that cancer has been claiming more than 40,000 lives annually in Andhra Pradesh. The state government spent Rs 217 crore in 2019–20 on treating cancer patients under the Dr. NTR Medical Service. The amount increased to ₹624 crore in 2023–24. To combat the disease, state government has resolved to conduct cancer screenings across the state for everyone.

Individuals aged 18 years and above can get themselves screened for oral and breast cancer. Cervical cancer screenings are available for women aged 30 and above.

The department informed that so far, government has conducted 5.3 million screenings, resulting in identification of 19,447 cases of suspected oral cancer, 15,401 cases of breast cancer and 17,373 cases of cervical cancer. This programme aims at comprehensive cancer prevention. All citizens can take advantage of the services provided.

Health officials pointed out that 155 specialist doctors, 238 district hospital specialists, 3,944 medical officers and over 10,032 community health officers (CHOs) are partnering in this extensive initiative. At the grassroots level, ASHA workers are distributing pamphlets to raise public awareness about cancer.

Officials stated that ANMs and CHOs are taking up surveys to encourage women to undergo cervical exams. Likewise, people are being advised to screen themselves for oral and breast cancer at the rural health centres. During the screenings, diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes will also be identified and appropriate treatment suggested. Suspected cancer cases will be referred to advanced medical centres for further examination.

The statement pointed out that 17 Preventive Oncology Units have been established in the state. These will conduct tests using biopsy and radiological methods and provide free chemotherapy and radiation to those in need at government and affiliated hospitals.
