Cow Slaughter in Honnavar Draws Fury, BJP VHP Slam Govt Inaction

Karwar: While the brutal attack on cattle in Chamarajpet is still fresh in public memory, a new incident of cruelty in Honnavar Taluk, Uttara Kannada, has left people shocked.

BJP and VHP leaders have strongly condemned the act, holding the state government accountable for the repeated occurrences.

The cow, belonging to Krishnachari of Salekod in Honnavar Taluk, was let out for grazing on Saturday but did not return home by night. When Krishnachari searched for it on Sunday, he discovered the cow’s head in one place and its legs in another. The three-month-old fetus of the cow was also removed. A complaint has been filed at the Honnavar Police Station regarding the incident.

Kumta MLA Dinakar Shetty, who visited the site, accused the Chief Minister and Home Minister of being responsible for such incidents, labeling them as weak leaders.

“These heinous acts occur because there is no fear of the police. If the police instilled fear among criminals, such acts wouldn’t happen,” he said.

Shetty urged the police to take immediate action. “Police must take strict action and ensure that those who commit such acts fear the law,” he stated.

The MLA also declared that no compensation from the government would be accepted by cattle owners affected by such incidents.

"We demand the protection of cows across the state,” he added.

BJP State President BY Vijayendra described the incident as deeply disturbing.

In a post on X, he recalled earlier incidents of cruelty against cattle in Chamarajpet and Nanjangud, stating, “Now, in Honnavar, the beheading and mutilation of a cow is an extremely heinous incident. Since the Congress government came to power, its indifferent stance on cow protection and its appeasement politics have emboldened cow slaughterers, leaving them unafraid of the law. The repeated attacks on our cultural and traditional values will not be tolerated by the people of this state.”

He further warned that if the government does not take strict action to punish the perpetrators and the forces behind them, the BJP will launch a protest.

“This is the land of Punyakoti, where the tiger bowed before the loyalty, justice, and righteousness of the cow and sacrificed itself,” Vijayendra said, urging the Congress government to remember the story of Punyakoti and take strict legal action against those exhibiting such inhuman behavior.

The VHP also condemned the incident.

“The evil forces opposing Sanatana Dharma, which advocates compassion and shelter for all living beings, have committed the heinous act of harming the sacred cow. This act must be condemned and opposed by all of humanity,” said Dakshina Kannada unit president H.K. Purushotham.

He urged people to participate in large numbers in the protest organized by the Go Samrakshana Samvardhana Samiti, to be held in Mangaluru on January 21.
