GHMC to Set Up 1K Smartbins

Hyderabad: With its bin-free concept collapsing, the GHMC has decided to reinstall garbage bins but with a difference. These bins, each with a capacity of 450-500 kg, will be equipped with a sensor that will alert the authorities when they are full.

The concept will work only if people throw garbage into the bins; In Hyderabad, garbage is generally strewn around the bins.

According to GHMC officials, 1,000 such smart bins will be set up in different parts of the city. Once they are full, the sensors will alert pick-up trucks which will then go to the spot and empty the bin.

Each bin will have a unique ID number. According to plan, the process will be monitored from an exclusive command control room at the GHMC head office.

The step to remove the traditional bins was taken in an attempt to get a good rank in Swachh Survekshan and a premature declaration of Hyderabad as a ‘bin-free city’ by the previous BRS government.

A GHMC official said they had started identifying locations. "These bins will be placed mostly in the garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) near stretches where many commercial establishments are located. Suggestions from corporators will be taken while installing the bins," said a GHMC official.

On Saturday, the Jatayu vehicle-mounted garbage suction machine was officially launched. This is meant to clean dry waste on the roads.
