Instagram announced a new video editing app called Edits soon after TikTok went briefly dark in response to a ban.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri said that users can pre-order it in the iOS App store and it will soon be coming to Android. He said that it won’t be available to download until next month. Mosseri added that the company will work with video creators for feedback.
“Today we’re announcing a new app called “Edits” for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” said Adam Mosseri.
Mosseri said that the video editing app will have a full suite of creative tools including a dedicated tab for inspiration, keeping track of early ideas, and a high-quality camera. Additionally, it will have the ability to share drafts with friends and creators and also provide insights into how the videos shared on Instagram using Edits perform.
Meta has earlier made moves to fill a market gap. For instance, TikTok was banned in India in June 2020 and Meta launched a similar product called Instagram Reels in early July. In 2023, the tech giant also launched Threads, a rival to social media platform X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk.
