In 2022, the head of the father-of-two's office, Jill Cuthbertson, instructed his staff not to send anything to Starmer under any circumstances.
The public figure quickly changed his email address. A source told The Sun the move was "dangerously obvious" as extensive security measures were added to prevent further tampering.

There was no sufficient evidence to support any emails being released to the public. However, security services could not confirm whether or not any sensitive information was taken.
Around the same time, Kremlin operatives broke into accounts of British Eurosceptics such as the former head of MI6, Sir Richard Dearlove. Months later, 20,000 emails were leaked online.

Former Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss went through a similar situation. When the 49-year-old was the foreign secretary, she reportedly got her phone hacked.
The unfortunate news was allegedly hidden, as the theft was discovered during the Tory leadership campaign.

In a strange coincidence, left-wing commentator Paul Mason's online information was also compromised.
Per The Sunday Times, the former BBC anchor, 65, was advising Shadow Defense Secretary John Healey behind-the-scenes on Russia and industrial policy when the breach happened.

Mason was visiting the Ukraine only days before the invasion. During that time, the political personality communicated with Healey via intermediaries through his email.
The messages contained information from Healey. However, they were said to be of "limited intelligence value" and would have only provided insights into Labour's thinking on defense.
The people who broke into the account did not share the memos with the public but obtained his contacts and sent fake messages to his fellow politicians.
