Team India captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir were not on the same page regarding the 15-member squad selection for next month's Champions Trophy, according to media reports.
According to a media report, Gambhir wanted Hardik Pandya over the young Shubman Gill as the Vice-Captain. However, his support was overhauled after Rohit and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar backed Gill in the leadership role.
Gambhir's choice of wicket-keeper was also not considered. The 43-year-old wanted Sanju Samson as the wicketkeeper-batsman over Rishabh Pant. But Agarkar and Rohit vyed for Pant.
India picked a balanced squad for the Champions Trophy set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan, while India's games would be held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The squad was released on Saturday with Bumrah, Shami, Jaiswal and Siraj being the most talked about names.
Siraj was left out for the all important ICC event, while Shami returned. Young Yashasvi Jaiswal too was picked as a back-up opener.
Moreover, Bumrah's availability was subject to his fitness as clarified by Agarkar.
"Bumrah has been told to off-load for five weeks after and he won't be available for the first two ODIs against England. We are waiting on his fitness and will know his status in early February from the medical team," Agarkar said during a press conference which he addressed alongside India captain Rohit Sharma.
The chief selector also confirmed that India's pace spearhead would miss the first two ODIs against England. Harshit Rana would fill in his shoes for the England games.
Squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana (only for England series).
