Karimnagar: In a major move, Telangana assigned traffic duties for the first time to women police personnel in Karimnagar police commissionerate limits.

The Karimnagar police commissionerate comprising approximately 2,000 officers, recently recruited 27 new women constables. Among these, five women were assigned to traffic management roles.

Currently, the traffic department operates with 57 male officers, one female head constable, and the newly appointed five women constables, bringing the total to 63 personnel overseeing traffic operations. Historically, traffic management in Karimnagar has been dominated by male officers, with women being assigned to other departments.

Traffic circle inspector Khareem, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, said: “The newly appointed women constables have undergone rigorous training and are now managing traffic at key junctions across Karimnagar. Their role is crucial to ensure compliance with traffic regulations, especially in our busiest areas.”

The five women constables, all of whom hold advanced degrees such as BTech and M.Sc., are now responsible for major junctions including the Karimnagar Bus Stand, Telangana Chowk, Kaman Chowrasta, Court Chowrasta, Mancherial Chowrasta, and Naka Chowrasta.

V. Sandhya, a newly appointed women traffic constable and a mother, shared her experience with Deccan Chronicle. “My husband has been incredibly supportive, sharing household responsibilities so I can focus on my duties. I am grateful to my parents for their unwavering support and encouragement,” she said.

V. Shirisha, another women constable with a postgraduate degree, mentioned the initial challenges of managing six-hour shifts. “With consistent effort and the support of our superiors, we have adapted well and are now managing our responsibilities efficiently,” she remarked.

K. Mamatha, who holds a BTech degree, expressed her pride in contributing to smooth traffic management. “Securing a government job was a significant achievement for me. Now, I am dedicated to ensuring minimal disruption for the public and enhancing traffic flow,” she said.

The introduction of women traffic constables is a testament to the Telangana state government’s commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality within the police force. This not only paves the way for more women to take on diverse roles in law enforcement but also ensures a more balanced and effective approach to traffic management in the state’s busiest districts.
